We Mean It!

One of the first things you will see when you visit the United States Flag Store’s online presence is a banner stating, “when we say it we mean it” and a graphic of a tag that reads, “Made in America.”

ImageSince the 70’s, the United States has seen a shift in being the leading society of producers, to a society of doers and thinkers. While America has gravitated towards technology and research over manufacturing, China has stepped in to be the major producers and exporters of goods.

According to the Made In America movement, “the average American will spend about $700 on gifts this year. If only half this amount were spent on gifts Made in USA, up to a million American jobs would be created!” (http://www.themadeinamericamovement.com/) The reality is, because of our great country’s fair wages, quality standards, and safe workplaces, these products are not always the most economical. Add to this the fact that the FTC defines “Made in America” as only a product whose final assembly or processing takes place in the US, and the waters can get quite muddy. If you have talked to anyone who has an opinion on this debate, you know it can be as heated a topic as politics or religion.

As a manufacturer of quality flags of every kind, we try to provide the market what they want: choice of high quality premium American flags, as well as more cost-effective imported designs. Every flag we offer on our website clearly indicates “Country of Origin.” On the Specification Tab in the product information, you can easily see where the flag is made so you can be sure you are getting exactly what you want. Additionally, if you prefer your flag be made right here in the United States, we have an entire pull-down menu dedicated to US Made American Flags for your shopping convenience. Typically banner flags measure somewhere between 27″-32″ wide and 37″-54″ long. Banner flags are commonly displayed off of a flagpole and bracket that is then screwed in the person’s home. Closely Knitted Relationship between the Valley Forge Flag Co. and John F. Kennedy

The John F. Kennedy Funeral service and novel “Death of a President” is shedding new light on a very special American Flag. The flag was actually given to Lt. Samuel R. Bird (President John F. Kennedy’s Joint Armed Forces Casket Team Officer) after the autopsy of John F. Kennedy was completed. The flag was carefully unfolded and lightly placed on the casket during the funeral ceremony. In the heavily researched book, “Death of a jfk-anniversaryPresident,”  by William Manchester, he states how important this flag was to the United States citizens and the Kennedy Family. “On the bunting over the coffin, by the field of stars, was a small label: ‘Valley Forge Flag Company, Spring City, Pennsylvania.’ He thought how proud the makers of the flag would be to know that it had lain over a President, and he decided to write them a letter” wrote Manchester. Lt. Samuel R. Bird sent the letter to the Valley Forge Flag Company and it is now presented and framed on the wall at the headquarters building in Wyomissing.

The beloved flag was carefully folded and given to Mrs. Kennedy. She was later photographed holding it close to her heart while walking away from the ceremony. To observe the 50th Anniversary on November 22, 2013 the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston will exhibit the flag along with the picture of Mrs. Kennedy holding the folded Valley Forge Flag. This is the first time that the Presidential Library and Museum will be focusing on JFK’s death, but they feel that it is now an appropriate time for citizens, young and elderly, to look at artifacts and have a sense of what the United States experienced when the assassination occurred.

In conclusion, the flag not only represents the United States of America, but it represents hardiness, purity, and perseverance. The unity of our people and the diversity of the nation were joined together during this time, like most hardships. As for Mrs. Kennedy, it’s interesting to wonder if the parting gift of the Valley Forge Flag eased her pain and brought her peace during a time of sorrow. That’s the wonderful thing about American Flags, they can be given in remembrance to honor the brave who loved this country; closely knitting a forever lasting relationship.

The United States Flag Store “Participates” in the 2013 Presidential Inauguration

On Monday, January 21, 2013, President Barack Obama was ceremoniously sworn into office by taking the oath that began his second term in the White House. The entire inauguration lasted only a day, but the preparation involved began way in advance, including the purchase of the American Flags that peppered the crowd in the National Mall.

Online Stores, Inc., parent company of The United States Flag Store, was contacted by the Visuals Management Coordinator of the 57th Presidential Inauguration Committee for an order of presidential proportions. The Coordinator needed to purchase 150,000 US Stick flags (8″ x 12″) to be handed out by the Committee to those attending. A tall order, but one that The United States Flag Store was ready to handle.

These particular stick flags are USA made, and in fact are manufactured at our factory in Pennsylvania. Needless to say, we were proud to see that the Committee was purchasing flags made in the USA. The Flag Store team was able to get the order done and delivered on time for the historical event.

You can find photos of our flags, and other moments, on the Committee’s Twitter page. If you, or someone you know attended the event and has photos with our flags flying, please feel free to post them to our Twitter page or our Facebook page.

Puerto Rico to Become a State?

Image

On November 6th, Puerto Ricans had their opportunity to share their opinion of whether or not to become an U.S. state.  But the results are a little confusing.

Puerto Rico was obtained by the United States in 1898 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. In 1900, Puerto Rico was granted a civilian government under the Foraker Act.  Though, for many decades leading up to present day, it has been debated whether or not to grant Puerto Rico statehood.

So last Tuesday, Puerto Ricans voiced their opinions concerning the recent relationship with the U.S. in a poll. The poll asked two questions: if they favored the current relationship with the U.S., and if the voters would prefer statehood, to become an independent country or be a freely associated state.

The majority of the people who didn’t leave the question blank, voted for becoming a state, the first time that that has happened in a long time. But because so many left the question blank, it technically isn’t considered a “win” for statehood. From here, the results will be forwarded on to Congress and the White House, who will determine whether or not to initiate the process to create a new state.

So with so much buzz surrounding the possibility of statehood for Puerto Rico, that means that having 51 states would require a flag change.

If there is to be a star added to the current U.S. flag, where would it go? How would the new flag look? How would you design the 51-star flag?

American Flag Pins – Lapel Pins

Iwo Jima Pin

American flag pins are a great way to support the U.S. without overdoing it. Don’t get me wrong: American flag t-shirts are awesome, but sometimes they can be a bit much. American flag pins, on the other hand, are rarely seen as inappropriate. You can wear them to school, church, work, or just around the house. With American flag pins, you’ll always be on the classy side of life.

Here at the United States Flag Store, we offer a wide selection of American flag pins, including one commemorating the Battle of Iwo Jima. We also offer service pins, military pins, and those featuring the support-our-troops yellow ribbon.

If you happen to be from Texas, Canada or the U.K., we also offer American flag pins featuring the U.S. flag coupled with your nation of state’s flag. There’s even a pin displaying the U.S. flag and the Christian flag side by side, making it easy for folks every where to express their love-of-country and faith at the same time.

American flag pins: they’re the way to go when supporting your country is one of your top priorities, no matter where you happen to be.
